we are going to cyprus for a week only at the end of july and hoped to do the day trip to egypt, However, I%26#39;m now a little confused by the mixed reports! Is it a fab, once-in-a-lifetime experience as we%26#39;d really be using all our savings or a waste of time? Plus is it cheaper(and easy to book) in resort or better to book in advance with the tour operator? Please help!

Hi,
Haven%26#39;t been to Cairo from Cyprus but have been 4 times to this city.
Have you popped over to the Cairo forum, or Sharm forum to see what folk say about the day trips?
I really ejoyed seeing the pyramids, the solar boat, the sphinx, the museum (but you never get enough time!) but it%26#39;s not for everyone.
I love going inside a pyramid, even tho it%26#39;s narrow, a long way to get to the inner chamber %26amp; very stuffy (don%26#39;t go in if claustrophobic!) but - again, it%26#39;s not for everyone.(2nd pyramid, walk about 70 steps down, along a bit, then about 60 more, then walk along a bit %26amp; you%26#39;re in the inner chamber, with broken sarcophagus).
I%26#39;m very interested in Ancient Egypt so - for me - it%26#39;s worth the trip. Day trips from Cyprus or Sharm are very long %26amp; tiring, but it was worth it for us.
Some folk are not prepared for the culture shock of a 3rd world country, the haggling with vendors, the persistsnce of the vendors %26amp; beduoin kids, the scams (even by the tourist police) like taking your pic with your camera %26amp; then wanting a tip t hand your camera back, but if you%26#39;re aware of such things %26amp; can see thru all this, it maybe worth while for you.
Dress conservatively, ie cover knees, shoulders %26amp; chest; men must cover knees %26amp; shoulders for mosques too.
There are some sad sites, re: animals, eg cats, scruffy, skinny horses %26amp; camels, even dead animals in the Nile tributaries, but that%26#39;s how it is there. Not saying I like that part.
You have to check your cchange carefully as scams are pulled with small denomination %26amp; large denomination notes, but again, if you know these things b4 going, it makes it less hassle for you.
There are plenty of local tour ops or, if you feel safer, you will be able to book in resort with your rep. We play safe when doing day trips to another country %26amp; always go with the rep, even tho we pay more to do so.
Regards

I agree with everything that Nephthys has said in his post. It is a trip to be remembered for all time. See my post of 27th May 2008 on the Cyprus Forum. To do the trip in one day one has to fly, this used to be from Paphos. See my post of 27th May 2008. Hope this helps.Have a good holiday.

Reith,
I%26#39;m a Goddess %26amp; therefore a lady!! lol!
Nephthys is the sister of Isis, Osiris %26amp; Set, mother of Anubis, the jackal-headed God, who was born after a %26quot;dalliance%26quot; with Osiris (Oh, I say!).
Glad you enjoyed your trip.
Regards
