crime in paphos

Never thought id have to post on this subject but a warning for everyone. crime is rising in paphos. someone attempted to break into my hire car in the hotel car park (athena beach) overnight.the passenger door lock and handle were damaged. the police officer who attended was very helpful. he arrived in an hour despite being one of only 2 on duty to cover 50,000 people! There was nothing in the car to steal so maybe whoever was responsible actually wanted to steal the car itself. the officer informed me that another crime had occurred at the hotel the previous night when a camera and 400 euros was stolen from a bag. unfortunately it would appear that the reason for the rise in crime is the influx of eastern european migrant workers.this is exactly the same problem as is occurring in the uk.This is not an unsupported allegation. it is fact both in the uk and in cyprus so be aware and dont leave valuables in cars!

Thanks for the warning Wales. It%26#39;s sad to see crime increasing there. When we first visited about 17 years ago we accidently left my father in laws v expensive canon camera in the back footwell of the hire car and we never locked the doors in those days!!! We were a bit young and dizzy and just thought we had misplaced the camera somewhere. Discovered it some three days later, exactly where we left it, in the footwell of the car which was parked on the main road of Coral Bay!!!!

Needless to say I am older and wiser now and a lot more careful. Will be ultra vigilant (as we always hire a car) this time after this warning and some others about credit card scams.

Thanks Again

I think the message is be as careful as you would be at home. Car theft happens everywhere home and abroad, not just in Cyprus but everywhere.

it is correct that the message is be as careful as you would in the crime ridden uk( sorry mrs home secretary but its true)but also as the first reply states it is new to cyprus. the crime rates have been incredibly low. i left a camera on a bus once and that was returned to me. ive never experienced crime bfore in cyprus but speaking to some ex-pats there and to the very friendly police officer, im afraid it is rising and its almost all down to the influx of workers from eastern europe - as i said thats a huge problem over here and one evryone needs to be aware of in cyprus now.

We are going to Paphos at the end of September for my 70th birthday, and we havent been for three years so I know we will see a big difference, its a pity really because when my daughter lived and worked there in the early 1990s, they even used to hide the key to the apartment as she shared with a couple of friends but when we were there in 2005, we thought that there seemed to be a lot of Eastern europeans working there and I suppose there will be more now, but we will just take extra precautions, I am still looking forward to Paphos as we have so many friends there and have arranged to have some good nights with our friends and celebrate my birthday with them, we are going all inclusive and booked the holiday in February and got a good deal, if we had left it until a few weeks ago it would have cost an extra £1,100 for the three of us. We are staying at Laura Beach which I know is a way out but we dont go out a lot when we are all inclusive only to meet up with people and we will get the bus down and a taxi back if we want to go and do our visits, and I know that our friends will no doubt pick us up a time or two, I will certainly have a lovely time with the people there, its such a shame that these immigrants are everywhere including the U.K. it cant be any worse than here, but we will still have a lovely time. We went to Cuba for New Year which was really lovely, my daughter had always wanted to go and it was brilliant in every way but its back to Paphos this year which to us is like going home.

There is no doubt about it crime is on the increase in Cyprus. Before some start to blame immigrants, let us also not forget locals have also been involved in crime. Cyprus is still a safe place and at no time have I met anyone, local or tourist who feels threatened or worried walking the streets of Cyprus.
