I would personally go for protaras
A large sweeping white sandy beach,
long street with plenty of bars and restaurnats.
I didn%26#39;t care for paphos, couldnt%26#39; find as nice a beach, and found the resort to be to spread out.
just my view.

hi depends if you have kids or not, ive just come back from paphos and loved it,w as there 4 2 wks end of june 08.
beaches arent as good as protaras although they arent that bad at all.
i would say protaras is better for familys, kids etc.
it really is a tough call, why not spend 1 wk in each if you cant decide!

Ive stayed in the vangelis they are in a fab location on the main strip very central for everything. I have been 8 times to protaras and love it, i think the beaches are probably a lot better than paphos.

I have been to Paphos once and Protaras 8 times. So i would say Protaras better beeches and better for the children. Going back again in September for 1 week.

Hello Tina,
I have never been to Protaras but I have heard the beaches on the Eastern side of the island are wonderful.
We always stay in Paphos.
Our two young girls love the beaches at Coral Bay.
We find plenty to do in Coral Bay %26amp; Paphos. It is spread out but the local transport is excellent and it is nice to wonder around different areas of the region rarther than the same small strip.
The water park is great, there is horse riding locally and there are plenty of water sports and boat trips from the beaches anmd the Harbour.
Paphos is teeming with culture including the Mosaics and Tombs of the Kings.
The Akamas Pennisular (nature reserve) is just a 30min drive away with an unspoilt coatsline.
The Troodos mountains are close by (90 mins) with many Monestaries.
With regard the Avanti, never stayed there but good location for Coral Bay and Paphos.
Good Luck, hope this helps.
Regards,
Stewart

Both areas are good for families and I like both but the beaches are nicer in Protaras so I think I%26#39;d have to say Protaras or Pernera (which is a quieter suburb of Protaras)

Hi Tina,
We%26#39;ve just got back. We had a week at Ayia Thekla- just outside of Ayia Napa and a week in Paphos. We had a car so did LOADS of trips around each area.
You need to decide what you want from your holiday to determine where to book.
The eastern end has some fantastic beaches. The sea is so clean and the sands are soft. Little fishes swim around your feet as you paddle. It is a little hotter at this end and not as green so in my opinion not as easy on the eye. Fig tree bay isn%26#39;t as big as I expected but it is so much fun, lots of watersports and boats (including peddelows with slides) but because of all these things it is VERY busy. If beaches aren%26#39;t your thing, there%26#39;s a couple of waterparks (quite costly-entrance is around €100 PER FAMILY plus beverages, food etc) lots of historical monuments and many shops, bars and restaurants. The food and drink is a bit cheaper in the east and there are a few good large supermarkets where you can get your weekly shop at a cheaper price than the UK. You do need a car to get to theses though. They are suffering with water shortages. We had 1day on 2off. I wouldn%26#39;t say that the eastern side has anything that any other med. resort hasn%26#39;t got. We did comment that you could have confused it with most places and I think the cost of getting to Cyprus as a holiday destination would deter me from going to the eastern side again.
BUT onto the west. We all love it. It has one or two good beaches but on a whole that isn%26#39;t why we go -one day is usually enough on sand. We love the people, the top quality restaurants, the shops, the Troodos, the tavernas, the waterpark, the evening stroll around the harbour, the little winerys, the green hills...everything. As we drove back to Paphos from the eastern end it felt like we were going home.
We hired a villa and an apartment for our hol(which saved us a lot) but I can recommend the Kefalos Beach Village just off the Tomb of Kings road for a self catering family hotel. We%26#39;ve stayed there twice in the past. From memory, I think the Avanti is a bit too far out of the harbour area for our liking. Our kids are 7 and 9 now but we%26#39;ve been going since the youngest was 2. He%26#39;s been to other countries but he always asks %26quot;when are we going back to Paphos%26quot;.
If you need any further help, please ask.
Sara
