Hanging Tree of Hankies

Not to sound too thick or whatever could someone tell me what the hanging hankies symbolises. I have often wondered when going by and can%26#39;t seem to find anything about them on the web.

Yeah i casn a bit, we went there in phapos last year and saw those, our car rep told us that they are for people who have illneses and they tie the hankies on and make a wish or smething like that, either that or its for peole that have died,

This is the Agia Solomoni Church.Originally a Christian catacomb retaining some of the l2th century frescoes. A sacred tree at the entrance is believed to cure the ailments of those who hang a personal offering on its branches.
