Travel Around Cyprus

My wife and I have not been back to Cyprus since the invasion in 1974. We spent the majority of our spare time in and around Kyrenia and of course, in those days, were free to travel freely around the island, north to south and east to west. Next September we celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary and are considering returning to Cyprus to visit some of our old haunts, basing ourselve in a private villa (with private pool - any suggestions?) close to Kyrenia. This raises a few questions which I hope some of the local experts could answer and advise on.

1. It seems easier, quicker and cheaper to fly into Larnaca or Paphos rather than Ercan, via a touch-down on the Turkish mainland, and then drive across to Kyrenia. Is it possible to hire a car from Larnaca/Paphos and drive over the border at Nicosia or do you have to transfer via taxi/coach and then hire a car in Kyrenia?

2. If we have to wait and hire the car in Kyrenia, can we then drive across to the south and drive back again?

3. We often used to hire a self-drive boat from the harbour; is this still possible?

No doubt I will think of many more questions over the next few weeks/months but in the meantime would be grateful for any help on the above.

Many thanks

Hi H20poloking

There are many many private villas for rental around the Kyrenia area. Have a look here for a selection www.northcyprusrentals.com or do a google search on Kyrenia villas. Depending on the size of the property, you should expect to pay between £250-£500 per week for a villa with pool. To answer your other questions:

1. This really depends on where you live in relation to the airport you will fly from. For example Gatwick, you need to factor in travelling to and from plus the extra 1.5 hours from Larnaca to Kyrenia and crossing the border. You can hire a car in Larnaca (not sure about Paphos) and drive across but you need to be careful about insurance and check (and preferably get confirmation in writing) that if you have an accident in the North, the hire car company will pay to recover the vehicle. This is very important and personally I wouldn%26#39;t risk it. If you hire your car in the North in advance the hire company will collect you from Larnaca for approximately £40 each way. I would recommend www.birdrentacar.com

2. I believe they have recently relaxed the rules and you can now take a hire car from the North to the South however you need to check with the hire car company because not all will allow it. You will then need to get extra insurance to drive in the South (and vice versa if you hire in the South).

3. Not sure I will see if I can find out.

Regards.

Thank you Jo - very helpful. I have had a look at a number of private villa sites - and there are loads of them out there - but you can%26#39;t always tell from photos what the villa, or more importantly the area around it, is going to be like, i.e. noisy neighbours, barking dogs or the pool overlooked from all sides. Trip Advisor is very useful when selecting hotels, but villas don%26#39;t get the same coverage.

Sounds as though wherever we hire the car, it%26#39;s going to be a hassle getting from the north to the south and vice versa.

Would appreciate any info on boat hire if you can get it.

Thanks again

Barking Dogs can be a bit of a problem here, I live near to Ozankoy/Catalkoy, if you post me dets of proposed Villas, I can check them out for you and report back, good webite for help would be

www.phpbb88.com/northerncyprus, you can PM me on there.

We have traveled to the North a few time last visit was in April 2008. We got a private transfer from Karapasha %26amp; Sons based just outside Kyrenia and also hired a 4x4 from them. They will pick you up from Paphos and bring you across the border then hand over your hired car and then do the reverse going back. They are also agents for a number of appartment/villa owners. We booked through %26#39;Owners Direct%26#39; and got a great appartment on the harbour.

Hi H20poloking

It%26#39;s not looking too good on the self-drive boat hire front. See here www.phpbb88.com/northerncyprus/viewtopic.php…

I%26#39;ll let you know if I hear anything though.

Thanks again Jo and to everyone who took the time to respond. Have registered on the site you recommended which also has some good advice. Looks as though self-hire runaround boats are out though. As for getting backwards and forwards across the border, obviously not easy. Ho, hum, back to the drawing board!
