BBC report on Cyprus water shortages

I have just spotted this on the Cyprus Living forum. It doesn%26#39;t say when but it sounds as though it is imminent.

%26quot;Ships containing drinking water are expected to start arriving in Cyprus in an effort to relieve the island%26#39;s chronic water shortage.

The water is being supplied by Greece, in a project costing the Cypriot government more than 38m euros (£30m).

Every day for the next six months two tankers will leave the port of Elefsina near Athens, bound for Cyprus.

After four years with no substantial winter rainfall, Cypriot water reserves are at their lowest since 1908.

Desperate times

The ships will dock on Monday at an offshore pumping station near the port of Limassol.

An undersea pipeline will then transport the water as far as the island%26#39;s distribution network.

It will then be distributed, but only to the southern, mainly Greek-speaking part of the divided island.

An additional 16m cubic metres (half a billion cubic feet) are needed to bring Cyprus%26#39; supplies up to acceptable levels.

If deliveries continue until December, as scheduled, the Greek ships will supply Cyprus with just half that amount.

Earlier this year, government water engineers dismissed the proposed tanker scheme as %26quot;pure science fiction%26quot;.

But another spring with negligible rain fall, coupled with the prospect of imposing water cuts in the hotel and tourist districts, forced them to reconsider.%26quot;

makes me wonder if the holiday companys will start acknowledging it now, as im going in less than 3 weeks and the know nothing, there is no official sortage warning as yet, lets just wait and see.yes i have just looked it up and that is all true.

|||

How long have we been discussing the shortage on TripAdvisor and still the Travel Agents refuse to acknowledge it - don%26#39;t suppose they really care. The information provided by Karen is correct - saw this on the eastern Cyprus forum.

|||

On the radio over here they are saying the water from Greece will only help reduce more water cuts. So in essence we will still have our weekly cuts.

|||

Cyprus is surrounded by water. They should spend the money building desalination plants. I hate to think how bad it%26#39;s going to be in just a few weeks time when many of the holiday makers arrive.

This problem will hit more popular holiday islands in the near future.

Hi

Just been reading about the water shortage, what will this actually mean for people who are going on holiday there?

|||

There are no cuts as yet in the tourist areas, so most holidaymakers are not being affected, some are probably unaware there is even a shortage! Our daughter has just come back from Pernera and said that they had water OK. People staying in villas outside the main tourist areas will be subject to water cuts.

I%26#39;m sure the tour companies are well aware of what the situation is with regard to water in Cyprus, but it is not in their interests to publicise the fact.

It has been on the foreign office advice for travellers for quite some time now, see fco.gov.uk.

|||

Cyprus and de sal plants. Yes some are on the way, but the EU have put restrictions on more been built.

Something to do with electricity and use of too much which is required by de sal plants.

So not all the fault of Cyprus. Maybe if we closed the water parks, and refused water for swimming pools, let%26#39;s not forget Cyprus is surrounded by water, you could swim in that !!!

|||

ive had a quick look on the fcobut coudnt find anything, not sure where to look, if its there as advice to foreign travellers, then why are they not stopping tourist going

|||

DurhamHazey, don%26#39;t worry unduly, it doesn%26#39;t advise against travel to Cyprus, just makes people aware of the water shortage. If you go on the site, click on %26quot;travel advice by country%26quot; and then type in Cyprus.

|||

Hazey - like RD says, don%26#39;t worry too much about it. After all, what is the worst that can happen? Nobody will go thirsty and people will not die of diseases because of lack of hygiene.

My absolute worst case scenario is if I get in the shower, shampoo my hair and find that there isn%26#39;t enough water in the tank to rinse the suds out.

I rest my case!
