never been to cyprus before. Loads of questiions

Hi everyone. We are renting a villa in Droushia in September. Anyone know anything about this place. I think we are out in the sticks, which is OK, but if anyone can tell me anything?

Also i%26#39;ve got no idea of prices but am sure it will be cheaper in the local village rather than the heart of town. Any one got any idea of 3 course meal with wine for 2 people?

Also can someone describe a meze for me and by the way how do you pronounce it? Mezzay? Meeze?

Hope these questions dont make me sound like a half wit. Promise you theres loads more like that!!!!

Hi, this is what this forum is for, to help and assist anyone interested in Cyprus particularly new visitors. I can%26#39;t help with the area you are staying in as I tend to go to the eastern side of the island but hopefully Karen will pick up this thread - she is the destination expert for the Paphos side of the island. I believe however Droushia is near Polis which is a lovely area. If you are renting a car you%26#39;ll be able to visit the Akamas peninsular and the Troodos mountains which are a must.

September is a lovely month to visit - still high temperatures in the day but not as humid as July/August.

Cyprus is lovely (I am slightly biased because I have a love affair with the island).

Prices have increased this year due to the very poor exchange rate - base your spending as you would in the UK but if you can eat in the local villages and steer away from the touristy places you%26#39;ll be able to have a cheaper holiday and experience the %26quot;true%26quot; Cyprus.

Meze is pronounced mezzay - this is a selection of local dishes (much like the Spanish tapas) which can take you all night to eat - sometimes as much as 20 little dishes. Best mezes are in the villages.

Beware, Cyprus will steal your heart!!

Hi Judy - welcome to the forum. Half wits, quarter wits and full wits are more than welcome here (not come across many of the latter though)!

Droussia is a mountain settlement between Paphos and Polis/Latchi. We have friends who have a traditional house there in a village just on the outskirts.

It really is the sort of place your imagination conjurs up when you try to picture a traditional Cypriot village. The little streets wind round the old stone houses and the old ladies dressed in black step to the side of the road when a car comes past.

The temperatures can be much cooler up in the mountains than down at the coast. We have even experienced a thunder shower up there while the coast has been basking in full sunshine. You tend to get a bit more of a breeze.

The mountain road between Paphos and Polis has a good few tavernas and restaurants dotted along it but you will need to drive to them.

I would say it is about a 30 minute drive to Paphos and about the same to Polis.

Hi there. My husband and I stayed in Droushia a couple of years ago but we stayed in a hotel called the droushia heights.Droushia is a lovely little village but there is not much there. There are about 3/4 restaurant/tavernas but it is a great place to stay.We hired a car for the two weeks we were there and did alot of exploring as there is a road directly down to Latchi which is great as it is on the coast and there are around 15/20 restaurants and bars to chill out in.You can go into the Droushia heights for a meal and a drink as it is very quiet and relaxed. We are staying in Paphos this year at a friends appart but next year we are returing to Droushia to stay at this Hotel. We did find it was slightly cooler up in the hills and the locals are great. As we drove through the village we ran over a bag and it must have got stuck under our car and we were stopped by a great local guy who tried to explain what had happened and even got under the car to remove it.You will really enjoy it.The village is very pretty as are the views so take your camera. We can%26#39;t remember if there is a shop/supermarket in Droushia but if not there are two main local supermarkets in Latchi.Hope you enjoy yourselves anymore questions please ask.

Hi again sorry I forgot about the meze.We had a meze from a taverna called the farm yard in Kathikas and you get about 20 dishes.each is brought to you as they are prepared not as you finish the last. You start with dips like hoummas(sorry about spellings) and tasaki with warm breads and salads you then get things like meat balls and garlic mushrooms and my favourite dolmades(mince, rice, onions and various other things wrapped in vine leaves). You also get fish and meats and basically anything they have that day fresh in the kitchen.A word of warning,Do not have anything to eat except your breakfast that day and take it slowly. We did not realise how much you get but it is so worth it.We are going to Cyprus for our 10th wedding anniversary this year and we are going for the meze on our anniv night.Try all the local food as everything is fresh and very tasty. My husbands favourite is lamb kleftico which is a joint of lamb with herbs and veg and slowly cooked in the oven.Yummy.Also try beef stefada which is beef in wine and veg slowly cooked. All the vegetarian dishes are tasty too.As you can see we have been quite a few times and we love our food.Anyway enjoy.

we had a number of different meze when in Cyprus - cost from 11E - 18E per person - with a bottle of local wine from 12 E upwards

food - start with a selection of local %26quot;dips %26quot; houmous etc with pitta bread - then possibly salad - olives - chips - kebabs - local sausages - fish - prawns - mousarka - etc sometimes as many as 20 items - all small portions - meal often served over a period of 2 hours or more - something to relax over - and because items served are small it does not offend if you do not like everything !!

its the best way to try local dishes
